Kavanaugh nomination, Murkowski and Collins

A salient fact I have yet to hear mentioned in the brief time since the accusation against  Judge Kavanaugh surfaced, is that Senator Murkowski from Alaska will not face reelection until 2022 and
Senator Collins from Maine will not face it until 2020. It has been speculated that if any Republican(s) were to vote against Judge Kavanaugh it might well be one or both of them.

If they wish to be reelected they must consider two possibilities:  They sink the nomination and,  if the Dems were to take the Senate, make the establishment of a conservative SCOTUS majority far less likely, and  they anger their conservative states. If they support him, regardless of the outcome of further investigation into the accusation, regardless of whether or not he is seated, they will have excited the wrath of the MeToo movement, which is presently on a tear.  Though many MeTooers are possessed of good will, their movement has probably been hijacked by those for whom accusation is condemnation and by man haters possessed of consuming bad will toward all men. Usurpation of this movement's prospective power is far too promising a power grab for the latter to pass up.

Should this accusation result in Judge Kavanaugh's defeat, the Senatorial election in November assumes critical import. President Trump will of course continue to nominate conservative judges for the post and he'll get one if we keep the Senate.  If we don't, Charles Schumer will have far too much to say about the next Supreme Court Justice and the return of the Court to its true function of respectful and restrained construction.   Jack

In addition: Charles Schumer took to the Senate floor today and did what Dems always do whenever they have half a notion that they are in the catbird seat; he sneered about what he recklessly regards as a guaranteed rebuff of the Kavanaugh nomination. This, despite reams of consistently favorable testimony, even from leftist apostates, on Judge Kavanaugh's integrity. This was a virtuoso performance even for one as reflexively contemptuous of the opposition as is Charles, who was seemingly born with a disdainfully curled lip. He is to be thanked for reminding us, yet again,of how insincere any call from Dems in exile for "bipartisanship" is. Their frantic and tortured separation from dictatorial power, except from their fiefs in CA and NY, inspires premature presumption of their restoration to dictatorial power on very tenuous pretenses indeed. This fight is far from over Charles so keep it in your pants. Jack

Well said, Jack! For those lefties who have already declared victory over Brett Kavanaugh, they might want to think back to all the times that they scoffed at Donald Trump! Personally I still believe Kavanaugh will be confirmed. As you say, the stakes are high indeed. Even if Kavanaugh were to be derailed, however, and even if the Dems took the Senate (both HUGE ifs, in my view), I suspect Republicans would still fill the seat before January.

I regret that Kavanaugh had to endure so much vilification, but I rejoice in the fact that he will never again take the "good will" of leftists for granted. He will see them for what they are.

Dr. Waddy: Well established points! I had never considered the possibility that the seat could be filled before January 1 if Kavanaugh were to be derailed. Even if the Dems were to win the Senate, a prolonged Schumer - President Trump battle over subsequent, no doubt conservative, nominees, might redound to Dem disfavor in 2020. I'm sure that Kavanaugh was advised that he was in for a ferocious ordeal by political fire should he accept the nomination, for which I laud him for the fortitude to endure in this fantastic political climate. If he is seated, he will not forget his ordeal.
