"A Federal case. . . !

"Hey, don't make a federal case of it!" A familiar admonition it is, based on an assumption that once it gets to the Federal level its SERIOUS.  When I was a kid  I called a local store owner to ask if he had "Prince Albert in a Can" (tobacco) (if he said "yes" you were supposed to say "well let him out", which was supposed to fulfill a seventh grader's dream of transcendent wit ). He said "well now that's a Federal offense" and it scared the living hell out of me.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to make a Federal case out of the following incident which I understand as described in our local paper: An illegal immigrant made a pizza delivery to an Army base in NY state and when told that his "city issued IDNYC card"  (whatever the hell that is) was inadequate ID, consented to a background check which revealed that he had disobeyed a deportation order in 2010. Note, he was ASKED. How many countries would afford him that consideration? He was  then arrested.

Governor Cuomo, his histrionic and dreamily Presidential juices stirred, wrote in response to this, to the Federal Dep't of Homeland Security's Inspector General (perhaps only one who has worked for a government knows how intimidating the the hint of an "IG" enquiry can be) that "Recent high profile incidents have cast light on the disgraceful and, in many cases, illegal tactics used by ICE," and went on to cite this incident as an egregious example, citing the illegal immigrant's unimpeachable work ethic and family life and conveniently ignoring his apparent freely chosen defiance of U.S. law.

Now Governor Cuomo passionately (as is his constant wont and a familiar tactic on his part) maintains that New York (the entirety of which he presumes to speak for; believe me, in our area of the state we despise him and passionately resent his presumptuous and dictatorial misrepresentation of our views ) "will not sit on the sidelines as our immigrant communities are threatened".  In what way, pray, are legal immigrants threatened by this action? And what about the demanding process  they willingly endured to reside here? And what about the fact that the laws they obeyed were enacted with compassion for those who seek to share our prosperity and freedom but also with consideration for the practical fact that we cannot accomodate everyone - we just cannot.

These considerations are of no moment to Andrew. So what is?  First  of all, he knows how government works. When a state Governor pitches a bitch, things happen.  The first impulse in the accused agency  is: just find someone to hang .Oh, Andrew  knows all this.

But there is more.  Andrew longs for the discrediting of as much U.S. law as possible to clear the way for  dictatorial fiat, which he intends to delight in when he ascends to the Presidency and which he considers justified by his unquestioned, well, " justice". Consider his executive policies while in charge of Federal housing (legal gun owners need not apply) and as Governor (those who disagree with my policies are not true New Yorkers  and do not belong). His totalitarian convictions have long been readily apparent to his subjects.

Ok, ICE is a Federal Agency and it is proper for concerns about its conduct to be directed to it. But I think Andrew has intentions in this which go well beyond addressing this incident: First: he wishes to instill fear of prosecution in those whose duty it is to enforce immigration law so that, well, they will do alot less enforcing and there will be alot more potential Cuomo voters around for 2020 and 2024. Second, he is resolutely opposed to ICE's fundamental mission itself - to ensure that democratically enacted U.S. immigration law is carried  through.

Andrew does have his problems with law enforcement in general. He approves the parole of  killers of police.  He reminds me of former MA Governor Dukakis, who gave vacations from prison to murderers,  in his touching regard for those incarcerated (not executed, mind you) for savage crimes.  He blithely states his intention to use his powers to defy immigration law in "his" "sanctuary state".

I hope this situation gets the President's attention and that he has a Bronx cheer in readiness for Andrew.  That may give those illegal aliens who seek Andrew's  advocacy to understand that there is a better way - the laws of our land.  Jack

Thanks for letting me know of this post, Jack. As you surmised, Blogger had left me in the dark.

Gov. Cuomo's antics are increasingly disturbing. Clearly, he thinks criticizing ICE will win him brownie points with the far left. I suppose he's right about that. The "Poor me -- I was only delivering a pizza" angle played well with the mainstream media, needless to say. But, if you ask me, ICE has every right, indeed a duty, to detain illegal immigrants who have disobeyed deportation orders. In fact, such people should be deported forthwith, or incarcerated. Again, if you ask me, ICE and the Trump administration have been very restrained to date. Only criminal illegal aliens are being prioritized for deportation. The vast majority of illegals are being left in peace. And yet the media (and Cuomo) howl! As we've discussed, the prosecution of a "sanctuary" mayor or governor under our immigration laws or for obstruction of justice could do a world of good. I hope we see it happen ASAP.

Dr. Waddy: Ditto, ditto. Cuomo in prison - what a sight that would be - he'd still be yammering though. Meanwhile he does much dirt. Officers of the law have understandable reason to fear that he would willingly take them to legal task for doing their duty. The old adage: "ignorance of the law is no excuse" is lent a new meaning by the militant left. "Ignorance of our views is no excuse and will not save you from our wrath when we hold you to account".
