OK, we took one on the chin and yeah, it hurts that it was thrown by a good, good man - John McCain. Its probably trite to say this but in war, including civil war, you usually suffer reverses. Lets look forward; we're still in the ascendent (and surely very far away from what we could have been experiencing now had Hillary not fallen).
President Trump's prediction that Obamacare will implode may well come true; that would be a defacto repeal. Conservatives would benefit politically in that case for having tried hard to formally repeal in time to stanch the deluge and RINOs would do well to check their pensions. As I see it, Dr. N.L. Waddy of SUNY Alfred observed recently in his perceptive blog Waddyisright.com, that repeal would force Dems to cooperate, since they are in the minority, in order to pick up the pieces they most value. Leftists always overrreach when they think they have gained the upper hand and they may irrationally think as much now. Speculation that Republicans must now work with Democrats on health care is wishful thinking; even mice know better than to hope for a change of heart from cats. Much as Shakespeare's Richard III disastrously expressed and acted complete contempt for all over whom he had achieved sway, Dems may now comically and vindictively think themselves back in the catbird seat they believe they deserve. Well, they are not.
First, President Trump holds the veto pen. Second, if Obamacare fluffs ala the 2008 economy, there will be all manner and multitude of pieces to pick up and while Dems are in the minority they cannot have their dictatorial way in new legislation or in the executive branch.
The way for us is clear. Do not cooperate with the Dems. Charles Schumer ably personifies the withering disdain they harbor for the real America and for any sign of weakness on our part. Unless Mitch McConnell can mount a comeback ( yet a real possibility, I think, he is an able legislator), legislative progress on Obamacare may not be doable just now. In order to advance decisive formal reforms on that and on necessities like budget, tax and immigration reform, we must concentrate on removing from office in 2018 , if possible, those Republicans who caved or wavered (I take no pleasure in the possibility that Senator McCain may soon be physically unable to hold office but it is reality ) and to increasing our majorities in Congress. Pure power is all that can disable radicals; they have demonstrated that ad infinitum ad nauseum.
Remember the biblical quote John L. Lewis was wont to roar: "They smote me hip and thigh and right merrily did I return their blows". Take heart, America, we're still the in the thick of it - the fight for our nation's life. Jack
